Sunburn: Relief and Recovery for Overheated Skin

Sunburn happens when overexposure to ultraviolet (UV) rays from the sun damages your skin. It's a common summertime woe, but luckily, sunburn treatment is usually straightforward.

This guide will soothe your sunburn woes and get you back to enjoying the outdoors safely.

Signs and Symptoms of Sunburn

Sunburn symptoms typically develop within a few hours of sun exposure and can include:

  • Red, tender skin
  • Pain and itching
  • Swelling
  • Blisters (in severe cases)
  • Chills
  • Fatigue

Sunburn Treatment at Home

Most sunburns can be treated effectively at home with self-care measures:

  • Get Out of the Sun: Seek shade or go indoors to prevent further damage.
  • Cool Down: Take a cool bath or shower. Apply cool compresses or damp cloths soaked in cool water to the affected areas for 10-15 minutes at a time.
  • Hydrate: Sunburn draws fluid to the skin's surface, so drink plenty of water to prevent dehydration.
  • Moisturize: Apply a fragrance-free moisturizer containing aloe vera or soy to soothe and hydrate the burned skin. Look for ingredients like calamine lotion or colloidal oatmeal for additional relief.
  • Over-the-counter pain relievers: Use ibuprofen or acetaminophen to manage pain and inflammation.

Do not:

  • Use petroleum jelly or greasy ointments on sunburned skin in the early stages, as they can trap heat.
  • Pop blisters. Leave them alone to prevent infection.
  • Scratch or pick at peeling skin. This can worsen irritation and scarring.

When to See a Doctor

Seek medical attention if you experience:

  • Fever
  • Severe blistering over a large area
  • Confusion
  • Signs of infection (pus, increased pain, redness)
  • Sunburn on your face or genitals

Sunburn Prevention Tips

Sunburns are preventable.

  • Sunscreen: Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher liberally and reapply every two hours, or more often if sweating or swimming.
  • Seek shade: Especially during peak sun hours (10 am - 4 pm).
  • Protective clothing: Wear wide-brimmed hats, sunglasses, and protective clothing that covers your arms and legs.
  • Limit sun exposure: Gradually increase your time in the sun to allow your skin to adapt.

By following these sun safety tips and sunburn treatment methods, you can keep your summer fun and enjoyable.
